About The Founder

Budi Tek was a Chinese-Indonesian entrepreneur, philanthropist, collector, and founder of Yuz Museum and Yuz Foundation.He entered the art world in 2004 as a successful entrepreneur, and over the years became one of Asia’s most respected collectors.

In 2007, he founded Yuz Foundation, followed by Yuz Museum Shanghai in 2014. He was a member of Tate Britain’s Asia-Pacific Acquisitions Committee, and in 2017, was named Officer of the Legion of Honor—France’s highest order of merit.Mr. Tek collected widely, but always with the intention to share. Through exhibitions, academic programs, donations, and sponsorships, he made his collection a platform for cultural dialogue and public engagement—shaping a legacy that continues to inspire on a global scale.

2014

Opening and Inaugural Exhibition

In May 2014, Yuz Museum officially opened with its inaugural exhibition Myth/History, marking its debut as a major cultural landmark in Shanghai. Founded by Budi Tek, the museum transformed a former aircraft hangar into a contemporary art space.

2015

Expanding Reach & Launching PSA

The museum presented Rain Room by Random International—an immersive installation that became a sensation and established Yuz Museum’s reputation in China’s art scene.

That year also saw the launch of the Public Space of Art (PSA), reinforcing the museum’s support for emerging artists and public engagement.

2016

International Recognition with Giacometti

Yuz Museum gained international attention with a major retrospective of Swiss artist, Alberto Giacometti. The exhibition elevated its global profile and showed its ability to host world-class art experiences.

2019

YUZ × LACMA × Qatar Museums Partnership

Yuz Museum partnered with the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) and Qatar Museums—marking a key step in global collaboration and reinforcing its role in international cultural dialogue.

2022

Wrapping Up Fenggu with Yoshitomo Nara

The museum closed its Fenggu chapter with a major exhibition by Japanese artist Yoshitomo Nara, drawing visitors from around the world and ending the era on a high note.

2023

A New Chapter – Relocating to Panlong

Yuz Museum opened a new chapter with its move to Panlong, launching with the exhibition A Journey. The relocation reflected its evolving vision and ongoing commitment to contemporary art.

2024

Celebrating a Decade of Art and Culture

Celebrating its 10th anniversary, Yuz Museum continues to curate innovative exhibitions and programs that inspire and engage—reaffirming its role as a leading platform for contemporary art in China and beyond.
